China's Gree Electric Appliances has accepted a 15-million-US-dollar civil penalty imposed by US safety authorities.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that Gree and two subsidiary firms failed to "report a defect and unreasonable risk of serious injury to the commission within 24 hours with dehumidifiers sold under 13 different brand names."
According to the announcement, Gree's dehumidifiers had a defect that caused the machines to overheat and catch fire.
The incidents began in 2012 and caused nearly 5 million dollars in property damage.
The defective dehumidifiers were recalled by Gree in 2014.
In addition to paying the civil penalty, the Chinese appliance company has agreed to implement a program to ensure compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act.
