In womens hockey,
Team USA team booked their place in the final after thrashing Sweden 6-1. They'll face either Switzerland or three-time defending champions Canada in the final.
The Canadians beat their North American rivals 3-2 in the final of Group A, and many are expecting it to come down to a bloody rematch for the gold. Although USA defender Anne Schleper points out that it would be an amicable bloodbath.
"Bottom line, we respect each other. Definitely. But when we're on the ice, it's physical, it's intense and it's just a lot of fun to play in. Definitely. We want the best whose going to be there come Thursday. So, if it's Canada, if it's not, we'll be ready."
In mens hockey,
Switzerland and Latvia take to the ice today to see who will get to face Canada in the quarterfinals.
Sweden and the USA also advanced directly through to the quarterfinal round after finishing first and second respectively in the preliminary round.
In ice dancing, American pair Meryl Davis and Charlie White out-skated their arch-rivals Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the defending champions from Canada. Davis and White scored a season best to beat the Canadians by 4.53 and reverse their podium finish from the Vancouver games.
Up at the slopes,
Darya Domracheva of Belarus won her third biathlon gold yesterday, which makes her the most-crowned athlete at the Sochi Olympics after winning the pursuit and individual categories earlier.
"Unbelievable! It's amazing. I dream about... I dream about to be Olympic champio from my childhood, but to get three medals here, it's also a dream from summer time, yeah, a dream come true."
In the mens aerial skiing final,
Chinese competitors, Qi Guangpu and Jia Zongyang, were the top two going into the final round, but both managed to crash on the final jump. Belarus's Anton Kushinir took gold after he executed a beautiful back, double-full, full, double-full. China's Jia did manage to scrape a bronze medal though.
And Norwegian skier Aksel Lund Svindal announced yesterday that he would be skipping his last race at the Olympics because of allergies.
"I don't think it is pollen I think it's some?I think it is something from the concrete or something, like that's in the air - like some fine dust. When I got here I felt it too and the doctors seemed to know exactly what it was because they gave me allergy medicine right away and it helps but it is kind of draining. "
People have been giving the Norwegian a tough time for quitting the Olympics for allergies; some are calling it a cope out because he hasn't been performing well. He medaled three times in Vancouver, but has failed to back any of those wins up at Sochi.
But I'm actually just curious to hear what Svindal's mom would say about his decision to pull out of the Olympics. The Norwegian mums are making a name for themselves as no-nonesense critics, after Fox Sports published a tough love commentary by Gro Johnsrud Langslet, mom of cross-country skier Martin Johnsrud Sundby.
Martin didn't do so well in the 15 kilometer classical race, and as his mom watched him struggle she said "Look at that, he doesn't stand a chance. You're the worst Norwegian, you should go home."
The latest medal count has Germany on top with 8 golds, 13 overall. And hosts Russia climbed up to second with 5 golds, 18 overall.
