Alain Perrin to Head Coach Chinese National Football Team
Senior officials of the Chinese Football Association indicate that French retired footballer Alain Perrin will become the head coach of the Chinese men's National Football Team.
If confirmed, the 58-year-old Frenchman will take over from Fu Bo, the current head coach of the Chinese team.
The job is expected to bring Perrin a yearly salary of about 1 million US dollars.
Wei Jixiang, Deputy Chairman of the Chinese Football Association, says choosing a good head coach is significant for the wellbeing the Chinese national football team.
"The prospective head coach should suit the current standing of the Chinese football. He should help improve our players' skills and tactics so as to lay a good foundation for the overall performance improvement of the Chinese team."
Perrin began his coaching career at AS Nancy, a French association football club, in 1983. He served as junior coach to Arsène Wenger.
Ten years later, Perrin had his first chance at management, taking over as manager of non-league club Troyes AC.
Last March, he was appointed new head coach of Qatari football team Umm Salal.
The Chinese national football team made a World Cup appearance in 2002, and made it to the final of the 2004 Asian Cup.
But the last few years have been rather lackluster time for the team.
Since 2011 they've lost ten of their nineteen matches, repeatedly disappointing fans at home.

Tennis update in Dubai and Mexico
In tennis,
Top seed David Ferrer of Spain has defeated Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Mexican Open.
Ferrer has thrived on the clay courts of Acapulco, winning three successive titles from 2010-12 and finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal in 2013.
This year, though, the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament has switched to a hard surface.
Still Ferrer looked at home.
"Obviously not having played an official match for more than four or five weeks, taken its toll, I do feel it on the court, a bit rusty in my movements but, look you know, the first match is a tough draw to play against a player who is very solid from the back of the court and you know he can serve big, he's a big guy so it was a tough one. But I managed to overcome it, I managed to play the good tennis at the important moment."
Meanwhile, second seed Andy Murray shook off a poor start against Spain's Pablo Andujar, before winning 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Over to Dubai, Juan Martin del Potro was forced to retire from his first-round match at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships due to a left wrist injury.
The Argentine had lost the first set 7-6(3) to Somdev Devvarman when he conceded the match.

Niklas Svedberg will serve as the backup.
Olympian Tukka Rask is getting an extra day off.
Svedberg got a win in overtime against Nashville in his one and only NHL game back in January.
None of the Bruins' Olympic medalists were at practice at TD Garden as their coach gave them as much rest as possible from their trips back from Sochi.
Rose withdraws from Honda Classic
In golf,
U.S. Open champion Justin Rose has withdrawn from the Honda Classic to rest his right shoulder.
Rose first hurt his shoulder last August during The Barclays. While he played out the remainder of the year, it forced him to wait until the Northern Trust Open at Riviera two weeks ago to play for the first time this year.
Rose says physical therapy is helping the tendinitis in his right shoulder, but he feels that four weeks in a row of tournament golf would be too much.
He plans to play next week at the Cadillac Championship, where Rose is a past champion.
