"Le Transperceneige" Inspired Bong Joon-ho's New Film
South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho says he was inspired by a French comic for his 2013 film "Snowpiercer."
"I was really lucky to find the comic 'Le Transperceneige' but I spent more than a year adapting it into a film. I want to convey through the film how people live in a society, a country and a social system. But, if this seems boring, audiences can see it as an action film."
Bong came to Beijing to promote the film, which stars Chris Evans, Song Kang-ho, Go Ah-sung, Jamie Bell and more.
"Snowpiercer" takes place in a future where a runaway experiment to stop global warming has caused an ice age that destroyed nearly all life on Earth. The only survivors are the inhabitants of the "Snowpiercer," a massive train that travels around the planet and is powered by a perpetual-motion engine. Riders at the back of the train revolt and try to seize control of the engine.
The exact release date of the film is still yet to be disclosed.
Angelina Jolie Shares Screen With Daughter in Maleficent
Angelina Jolie will star in the much anticipated film "Maleficent," Disney's upcoming take on the classic Sleeping Beauty story. Her youngest daughter Vivienne will play the toddler Princess Aurora and become the first of Jolie's children to share the screen with her mother.
Jolie explains that she and fiancé Brad Pitt have no intention of pushing their six kids to become actors. However, when the 38-year-old actress-director puts on the bewitching makeup, horns and costumes required for her character in Maleficent, child performers would not come near her. In the end, the part had to go to a child that liked her and was not afraid even when she was in costume. "So it had to be Viv," Jolie says.
Oscar winner Angelina Jolie was this year's recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Both she and Pitt have, in recent interviews, described a blissfully happy family life despite struggles with Jolie's health.
"Maleficent," featuring both mother and daughter, is scheduled to hit theaters this summer.
The Grandmaster wins Best Film at Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards
The 25th annual Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Awards were held last night with stars from both sides of the camera turning out.
Among them was Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai who has just returned empty handed from the Oscars on Sunday.
His kung fu epic "The Grandmaster" was nominated in two categories at the Academy Awards – costume design and cinematography . Although he didn't win he didn't seem too downhearted:
"It was a very productive trip, especially when a Hong Kong film like 'The Grandmaster' is able to receive exposure on this platform. Most of the awards were given mostly to two films. I think that's interesting."
"The Grandmaster" had better luck in Hong Kong, taking home Best Film and Best Director, while Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi were named Best Actor and Best Actress respectively.
Conan O'Brien to Host MTV Movie Awards
Comedian and late-night talk-show host Conan O'Brien will host this year's MTV Movie Awards. He made the announcement at his desk, accompanied by cheap-looking knockoffs of some of entertainment's most prestigious awards. What does O'Brien think of these awards? "They're all garbage!" he screams and goes on to say, "There's only one award that matters, it's the MTV Movie Award."
The MTV Movie Awards offers a cheeky take on Hollywood's usual black-tie and gown awards season by handing out golden, popcorn-shaped trophies in categories like "best villain" and "best gut-wrenching performance." It bestows honors to the year's blockbuster hits that were likely to have been overlooked by the Oscars and the Golden Globes.
This is O'Brien's first time hosting the annual show, which will take place on April 13 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The MTV Movie Awards traditionally serves as the lead-in to the summer movie season.
French Actress to Sue Magazine Over Hollande Affair Allegations
French actress Julie Gayet is suing the magazine "Closer" over a publication of photos and reports which allege that French President Hollande was having a secret affair with her.
The 43 year-old woman is seeking 54,000 euros or 74 thousand US dollars from the magazine in damages and costs, plus the publication of a summary of any judicial ruling in the case on its front page.
Her lawyer, Christopher Mesnooh, says the actress has the French law on her side.
"Nothing is open and shut but it is true that she certainly has French law on her side. French law is very, very protective of people's private space, even of public officials. She benefits from the protections of French law."
The magazine's publication of the alleged affair resulted in France's first lady, Valerie Trierweiler, needing to be hospitalized. Shortly after, the First Lady and the French President ended their 7 year relationship.
This case, which opens on Thursday at a court in Nanterre, will pit the concept
