Where there is life, there is hope. Hi guys, here comes our happy abc. I am your friend evey
Swedish furniture maker IKEA’s Xuhui branch in Shanghai has released a new company policy of “no food, no seat” in its café. The IKEA café in this one shanghai branch has turned into or be treated as dating heaven? Sad news for elderly lonely hearts in Shanghai: they can no longer look for love in Ikea.
The Swedish furniture giant’s Shanghai store has seen a strange phenomenon of senior citizens descending upon its famed cafeteria [kæfɪ'tɪərɪə]to socialise and even find partners.
Locals said it occurs twice weekly, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
China’s state broadcaster CCTV News reported that the elderly patrons['peɪtr(ə)n] would often buy a cup of coffee or some bread and "spend an entire day just chatting with others".
They are believed to be part of a dating community, making use of their Ikea membership cards.
This week, Ikea put a stop to it by imposing a strict "no food, no seating" rule to discourage senior citizens from occupying canteen seats for "extended periods", the café area would only open for the people who have bought their food bascially who are going to pay.
In a notice posted at the entrance of the Ikea Shanghai Restaurant, staff identified an "illegal blind-dating group" and accused it of "uncivilized behavior".
"The situation has adversely affected the dining experience and security of most of our customers," it said, They have been said to be talked very loudly, adding that it had received public complaints about "spitting" and "quarrels and fights".
"It is having a negative implication [ɪmplɪ'keɪʃ(ə)n] for our canteen’s operation. From today, the restaurant will only be for people who purchase['pɜ:tʃəs] their food first." And if any uncivilized or violence behavior occursed, IKEA will take legal action.
The news has attracted attention from netizens['netizən] on Chinese social media, with many in support of the elderly.
For those not familiar with IKEA’s operations in China, its café has been treated as a free matchmaking heaven by Chinese elders. Other customers are not always happy with this fact. Customer complaints include elders speak loudly, spitting on the floor and even engaging physical violence. Can this new company policy keep the unwanted traffic at arm's length? Is it fair for other customers?
And why these customers wanted to choose IKEA as their dating place, there must be some certain reasons .I think maybe IKEA has created a friendly and cozy place that people can enjoy. they feel like if they go to park they won’t meet many people,” I want to talk to my friends, I want to talk to some people I like, so I choose to there but in IKEA, there always has many people sitting randomly. Or some people just want to enjoy IKEA’s service without taking any money.
Here are some people’s comments.
"They are harmless," wrote Ed Ed Chiu in a reply to a post by CCTV News on the popular Chinese micro['maɪkrəʊ]-blogging Sina Weibo platform.
Weibo user Lee Xin slammed the move as a "strict measure" and said it was cruel to elderly patrons['peɪtr(ə)n].
"What wrong are they doing? They are lonely and are probably hoping to find some company again. If anything, the store should practise empathy and at least sympathise ['sɪmpəθaɪz] with these old people," she said.
The move was criticised by some elderly patrons, who spoke to local media outlets.
"We’ve been to fast food outlets like McDonald’s - but there are barely any peers there," said an 86-year-old man who went by the name of Qiu.
Mr Qiu told the state-controlled Global Times newspaper: "We feel like aliens - surrounded by youngsters. If there is another place in Shanghai where elderly people can gather, we are more than ready to pay twice as much and travel further."
But others online voiced support for the store’s management, praising its efforts in "maintaining store policy".
It is important that Chinese government takes some actions to help the elderly to arrange their daily life.
I support the way the business did, some elderly are in fact careless about other’s feeling, in addition, government has obligation[ɒblɪ'geɪʃ(ə)n] to deal with the problem of the elderly’s loneliness.
It is not Ikea’s duty to hold them. I think the local government should solve this problem .Officers are supposed to build place where the old men can play with each other. We can’t put our thought onto others.
IKEA is a Swedish furniture and home products retailer['riːteɪlə] that has stores all over the world. It is famous for well-priced flat pack furniture that customers assemble at home. It also sells accessories[æk'sɛsərɪz] and bathroom and kitchen items. It is the world's largest furniture retailer. IKEA was started in 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad英瓦尔•坎普拉德 from Elmtaryd 埃姆特瑞in Agunnaryd阿根纳瑞德, South Sweden. The IKEA acronym['ækrənɪm] comes from the initials[i'niʃəls] of the founder and the places he grew up. The company operates over 300 stores as franchises ['fræn,tʃaɪz]in 37 countries. It has over 12,000 products in its catalogue. The company employs over 125,000 people worldwide. IKEA’s vision is “to create a better everyday life for the many people by offering a wide range of well-designed, functional home furnishing ['fɜːnɪʃɪŋ] products at prices so low that as many people as possible will be able to afford them”.
Last time I went to IKEA with my friend, I can feel many humanized designs of IKEA, including the café area. Its really a comfortable place to talk and chat, people in there can feel homelike and cozy. Maybe it’s the reason why elder people would like to choose this place. I also saw many customers sleeping in bed or on the sofa, although IKEA allow people to sit on the bed to make people see and try their furniture, but should make it clean.
In Evey’s opinion, I think this kind of behavior is uncivilized, many people should have the sense of keeping rules, noticed what you are doing. IKEA is really a nice place to make people feel at home, and this is what IKEA’s target. But it doesn’t mean that you can do anything you want to do just like in your own home even sleeping in public place or taking up public place for a long time.As public space in China is so limited especially in major cities, people do these because they can’t find a better place. So it needs government to do some actions to create more nice free place to relax themselves so that they can enjoy it .
