Etymology: Riding on someone's coattails comes from the fashion of a tail on a man's coat. Children could easily grab the coattail and ride along.
Examples:
A. Like it or not, he realized that he had been riding on his father's coattails all his life and whenever he thinks about this he feels so depressed.
B. The later generations of the family have been riding on their forefathers' coattails since they were the pioneers who went to America during the gold rush and accumulated wealth.
