He woke up. He didn’t have a dream. He hadn’t had one for a while.
Beside him, she was sleeping, soundly and safely. He twitched on the bedside lamp discreetly, whose bulb cast a dim radiance over her heart-shipped face.He was fascinated by the color of her hair under the soft light. The usual boring sand was turned into mild orange, reflecting tiny halo. Even in the darkness, it seemed that he could drown in that orange.
He pretended to be sleeping when she left for work, for study, for something. Then he got up, to book a one-way ticket, from here to L.A., departing on next Friday.
When she came back, she looked rather exhausted. She was eating the food he cooked almost mechanically when he said,
“I’m about to leave for L.A.”
That day she went to see him off, lips pinned together firmly.
Time to bid farewell, he hesitated and bent down to kiss on her forehead. Her skin was wet and slippery, feeling strange at such hot summer night.
He thought as he got on the bus, leaving her, and their rent apartment far, far behind.
An escape.
