《掩耳盗铃》

从前，有一个人看见人家的大门上挂着一个铃，很想去投它。怎样才能把铃偷到手呢？他想：“手一碰到铃，它就会响，那我就会被人发现。如果把耳朵捂起来，那就听不见了。”
于是，他就把自己的耳朵捂起来，去偷那个铃。结果，他刚伸手碰到那个铃，铃就响了起来。他很快就被抓住了。
这个成语的意思是：愚蠢的人自己欺骗自己。

There once was a man (he wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer) who lived next to someone relatively well-off. One day, the man spotted his neighbor hanging a beautiful brass bell next to the door. “I want that bell!” he said to himself, observing the shiny surface. “I will steal it if I have to!” The man pondered how to go about doing so. After all, even the slightest fool knows that a bell rings when moved. If the man tried to take the bell away, the sound alone might alert the people sleeping inside that house. “If only I could find a way to muffle the bell's tones…”
Suddenly, the man was struck with inspiration. “If I cover my ears, I shall not hear the bell! ” And so, with this “brilliant” plan in hand, he set about plugging his ears in preparation for the thievery to be carried out that very night.
Now, as everyone should know, this is an exceedingly silly idea. As a result, the neighbor and his wife were alarmed at the very first chime of the bell, wrought as soon as the silly man reached a hand out to touch the brass bell. The man was caught and put in jail, and he never did figure out why it was that his neighbor had heard a silent bell.”
The man thought he was fooling his neighbor, but in the end, he fooled only himself.
