Early on, Atkinson developed a love of film. Atkinson acted in many school plays, but he didn't think showbiz was in the cards, so he went on to study engineering at Newcastle University. He was rumored to have graduated at the top of his class. In the fall of 1976, Atkinson arrived at Oxford University to pursue a master's degree. In sketch comedy shows on campus, Atkinson surprised his classmates with his ingenuity. In July of 1978, the prestigious Hampstead Theatre in London asked Atkinson to do a sketch show. At the Hampstead Theatre, Atkinson impressed many people, including his childhood idol John Cleese. It was after he caught a performance that Cleese invited Atkinson to perform with him for the Amnesty International Benefit Show called The Secret Policeman's Ball. At The Secret Policeman's Ball, Atkinson held his own alongside Britain's most famous comedians. It seemed Rowan Atkinson was set on a path to stardom. In 1980, Atkinson won the British equivalent of an Academy Award — a BAFTA — for Best Light Entertainment Performance. Twenty-six-year-old Rowan Atkinson had become a household name in England. Mr. Bean was an awkward, silent comedy character Atkinson had been developing for decades. He had existed in one form or another since Atkinson's Oxford days. Atkinson realized that his silent comedy character would be his ticket to winning over an international audience. Without words, the humor could transcend language and culture. On stage, Mr. Bean’s silent comedy was a resounding success, and network executives were convinced that the quirky character deserved his own TV show. On New Year's Day 1990, the first episode of Mr. Bean premiered on Britain's ITV channel. Mr. Bean was unlike anything on television. The show featured very little dialogue. The show was a huge hit, attracting up to 18 million viewers per episode. On May 15, 2006, Rowan Atkinson reprised his role as Mr. Bean, arriving on set to film the sequel to the 1997 film. He said that this would be the last appearance of Mr. Bean, because he wanted the iconic character to remain ageless in the eyes of the world.
